Pecos Bill: In conjunction with the Summer Reading Challenge, Fort Bend County Libraries invites students in first through fifth grades to a fun, interactive performance of “The Adventures of the Real Pecos Bill” on Wednesday, July 13, beginning at 2 p.m., in the Meeting Room at Cinco Ranch Branch Library at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy. The performance will be repeated at 3 p.m. Many children are familiar with the tall tales of the lovable cowboy character Pecos Bill and his legendary feats of wonder in the Old West. In this performance, Hope Shiver and David Keepman, from the theater group “Voices from the Past,” will re-enact the tall tales of this fabled cowboy hero. Because seating is limited, this program is for school-aged children entering grades 1 through 5 ONLY. A free ticket, available one hour prior to the performance, is required for admission. Intro to MS Word: Fort Bend County Libraries’ Adult Services staff at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present a free, introductory computer class, “MS Word Survival Basics,” for version 2016, on Wednesday, July 13, from 2 to 3 p.m., in the Computer Lab of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy. Learn the basics of using this word-processing software program to create letters, resumés, forms, and other types of documents. The class is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. Fort Bend Health & Wellness EXPO: The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Healthcare Division will host the annual “Fort Bend Health & Wellness EXPO,” on Thursday, July 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. The expo will be held at the Sugar Land campus of presenting sponsor — Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital at 17500 W. Network Nites & Bites: Network Nites & Bites at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at the hospital at 17500 W. Grand Parkway S. in Sugar Land. Presented by the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, the member-exclusive event includes networking, food, drink and music. Attendees are encouraged to bring business cards to share. Estate planning: Fort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library will present “The Truth About Getting Your Affairs in Order: Blended Families and Bad Blood” — a program in the Senior Series for older adults and their family members — on Friday, July 15, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Meeting Room 1 of the library at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. Liz McNeel, a senior real-estate specialist and certified senior-housing professional, will be joined by a panel of legal and financial-services professionals who will share their recommendations of best practices to ensure one’s estate is handled according to one’s wishes after death. Gain a better understanding of some of the consequences of poorly-executed estate plans, as well as pitfalls that can arise with blended families and those with “complex” relationships. Faux Calligraphy: Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will have a “Faux Calligraphy Workshop” for adults on Friday, July 15, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Conference Classroom of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy. Faux calligraphy is the artistic technique of using any sort of writing instrument to imitate the look of calligraphy. In this workshop, learn several different calligraphic-styles of lettering and use watercolor markers to design a bookmark that shows off these skills. Materials for this workshop are provided, courtesy of the Friends of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library. The program is free and open to the public. In this workshop, Rathna Kumar will demonstrate how dance can be used as a form of communication. Through the elaborate vocabulary of Indian dance, she uses hand gestures to tell stories. Children will receive hands-on instruction in the various aspects of Indian dance and how it can be used as a form of sign language. The workshop performance will conclude with a folk dance involving the entire audience. This performance is for families with children of all ages. Made possible by a grant through Young Audiences of Houston, the performances are free and open to the public. Tai Chi demo: Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library will present an introductory demonstration of Tai Chi techniques on Saturday, July 16, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 1001 Golfview in Richmond. Members of the USA Tai Chi Academy will present a demonstration of tai chi. Participants will learn simple forms of tai chi, which is often practiced for its health benefits and meditation. Discover how focusing on one’s balance can help a variety of issues, including arthritis. Those attending the class are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing. This class is suitable for adults and older teens. The program is free and open to the public. E-reader Q&A: Do you have a new Kindle or Nook but you’re not sure how to use it? Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library will have an E-Reader Question-and-Answer session on Monday, July 18, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the Adult Services Learning Lab of the library, located 1001 Golfview in Richmond. The e-Reader Question and Answer session is a walk-in clinic during which patrons can bring their mobile reading devices and have their questions answered about using the device, downloading ebooks, or streaming movies. Learn how easy it is to check out free ebooks, e-audiobooks, music, and movies from the library’s online digital collections, OverDrive and Hoopla. The session is free and open to the public. Earth Kids Kind Kamp: Join Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for Earth Kids Kind Kamp. They will be exploring entomology, wildlife, nature and more July 18-22. The camp is open to third- through fifth-grade students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. The cost $80 which includes daily snacks and camp T-shirt. Culinary Book Club: The Culinary Book Club at Fort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library will meet on Wednesday, July 20, beginning at 1:30 p.m., in Meeting Room 1 of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. The theme of the month is “Avocado Fest.” The Culinary Book Club meets on the third Wednesday of every month, and different cooking genres or topics are explored each month. Kids Into Fashion: The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be hosting the Kids Into Fashion Camp on Wednesday and Thursday, July 20-21. The camp will be from be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Join us as we venture on a two-day exploration through the fashion industry. The participants will have the opportunity to learn how to reconstruct a garment, design a fashion collection, learn photography basics and start an online fashion boutique. The camp will be held at the Fort Bend County Extension Office, located at 1402 Band Road Suite 100, Rosenberg, Texas 77471. The camp is open to youth ages 10 to 16 years of age. Podcast club: The next meeting of the University Branch Library’s Online Podcast Club will take place beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 21. The theme for the month is “Fun with Music.” A link to the Webex meeting will be emailed to all who register. Similar to a book club, the Podcast Club provides an opportunity for podcast listeners to get together to discuss podcast selections from a themed podcast-listening list and share their opinions on trending topics. Each month features a different theme, along with a short list of podcast episodes. The Online Podcast Club is free and open to the public. Writing Club: Join other aspiring writers at Fort Bend County Libraries’ “Story Spinners Writing Club” on Thursday, July 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., in Room 2C, at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview Drive in Richmond. The topic for July is “Villains.” From beginning blogger to published novelist, writers of all genres and experience levels are welcome to write, share, learn, support, network, and critique each other’s work. Writing prompts, brainteasers, and brief exercises will be available to ignite the imaginations of any and all wordsmiths who wish to hone their craft. Mural making: In conjunction with the Summer Reading Challenge, Fort Bend County Libraries’ First Colony Branch Library will welcome muralist David Maldonaldo for a “Collaborative Mural-Making” program, for students entering grades 5 through 8, on Thursday, July 21, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land. During this Middle School program, Maldonado will explain the mural-making process, from design concept to execution. Students will learn about the art of mural making and create their own murals to take home. The performance is free and open to the public. American Revolution: Fort Bend County Libraries will present a history program on the American Revolution on Saturday, July 23, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Meeting Room of George Memorial Library at 1001 Golfview in Richmond. Dr. J. Kent McGaughy, a professor of History at Houston Community College, will discuss the events leading up to the American Revolution. Learn about the major battles of the war. McGaughy received his doctorate degree in U.S. History from the University of Houston. The program is free and open to the public. FBCL Reads: Fort Bend County Libraries’ virtual book club - “FBCL Reads” - will meet online on Wednesday, July 27, beginning at 10 a.m. The book to be discussed is “The Missing American” written by Kwei Quartey. FBCL Reads book-club meetings will be live-streamed through Webex so that readers can participate virtually and interact with others in real time. The book club will meet online on the fourth Wednesday of every month. This book selection is available in print and digitally as an e-book through FBCL’s e-Library OverDrive collection. Additional print copies are available at George Memorial Library in Richmond. The book club is free and open to the public. World of Bubbles: In conjunction with the Summer Reading Challenge, Fort Bend County Libraries invites families with children of all ages to a fun, interactive program, “The Wonderful World of Bubbles,” on Wednesday, July 27, beginning at 3 p.m., in the Meeting Room at the Sugar Land Branch Library, located at 550 Eldridge. Learn about simple math and science and the art of bubbles when Shelly McBubbles creates mind-blowing bubbles, including giant bubbles, bubble clouds, bubble chains, and a cube bubble. Her grand finale is not to be missed! This program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Sugar Land Branch Library. Proceeds from the Friends of the Library book sales and annual membership dues help to underwrite the costs of special programming and various cultural events at the library. Maker Station Summer Camps: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension presents the Maker Station Camps focusing on creating something from nothing. Campers will create, plan, and build and much more. The camp is open to third- through eighth-grade students from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at the Fort Bend County Education Center at 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg. Akshaya Patra USA: Akshaya Patra is a non-profit organization which feeds 1.8 million school children midday hot lunches on every school day. Food is unlimited to all kids. They serve nearly 20,000 schools across many states in India. Akshaya Patra vision is that no child shall be deprived of education due to hunger. Their mission is to feed 5 million school kids by 2025. Akshaya Patra Houston chapter has organized a fund-raising event on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and musical concert. Car Culture Show 2022: Car Culture Show 2022 is held bi-monthly from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sundays in the Alamo Theater parking lot in LaCenterra at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. in Katy. The next show is Sunday, Sept. 4. There will be more than 50 exotic and muscle cars on display, along with a DJ spinning tunes and other exciting amenities. See more details at thecarculture.org.

Texas Coastal Prairie Conference: Preserving lands and legacies: The Texas Coastal Prairie Initiative, made up of 25 conservation organizations, will bring landowners and conservation partners together to discuss the preservation of wide-open spaces in Texas. The conference will include a full day of workshops and presentations from 9 a.m-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, followed by field trips to remnant and restored prairies as well as working ranches and farms from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. The conference takes place at University of Houston-Clear Lake Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX 77058. The cost is $85 or $45 for students. Instead of shutting down the program immediately, they let it fade away over the course of a year. A tidal wave of applicants has now rushed to seek billions of additional dollars in last-minute tax breaks.
